Tesco has introduced new security robots as part of its latest clampdown on in-store retail crime.

It is understood the new PID360 security robot has been developed by security tech brand Deter Tech, and will be installed in a number Tesco stores across the country.

Using its 360-degree camera, the devices will be placed at the entrances of closed stores at unsocial hours to detect the presence of thieves.

The yellow and blue chequered devices have previously been used on construction sites to detect criminals, but it is understood the UK’s largest retailer has launched the new deterrents to protect stores during closed hours in its latest crackdown against crime.

According to the Daily Star, the devices have been introduced at a series of at-risk locations across Manchester, Bristol and Newcastle.

A Tesco spokesman said: ‘This photo shows a security device which is used in some stores outside of opening hours, when needed, such as to prevent burglary or following damage to our property.

“The unit should not have been on the shop floor during opening hours.”

The installation of the new devices follow Tesco debuting 4ft smoke machines in some of its shops earlier this year, to stop people from stealing goods outside of opening hours.

It comes amid fellow retailer Morrisons deploying portable ‘RoboCop’ style security cameras along its alcohol aisle in a trial that sparked backlash among some shoppers who claims the new devices have left them feeling “like a criminal”.
