Wasabi axes plastic trays and debuts new look for grocery line

Wasabi has cut its plastic use as it debuts a new look for ready-to-eat “fakeaway” meal packaging across its supermarket grocery range.

The refreshed branding is set to roll out across the full Wasabi grocery line, such as its meal-for-ones, sides and ramen range.

It features a new design, including revamped typography, updated images on its bento box meals and the inclusion of the Wasabi circular logo in the Japanese sushi and bento restaurant chain’s iconic green colour.

Set to launch this week in Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Co-op, the chain has also removed the plastic tray insert from many of its meals, estimated to save 77 tonnes of plastic a year.

Wasabi is also changing the packaging format on its sides range to drive more differentiation between those products and its meal-for-one items, and having listened to consumer feedback, will move from a sachet to a dipping pot in its gyoza range at the end of September.

The new changes will be supported with a flavour focused multi-channel campaign later this year to boost consumer awareness.

Wasabi head of marketing Annabel Stephens said: “We’re excited to reveal our new packaging design which puts our delicious food front and centre. Our tasty new design is an evolution to strengthen and evolve our visual identity and brand touchpoints whilst staying true to our Wasabi roots.”

The chain’s new re-design comes amid a rise in popularity of restaurant-branded grocery products, with online supermarket Ocado stating that “fake away” products have soared in recent years, as consumers look to recreate the restaurant experience at home, on a budget.

    I understand Benito boxes are recyclable. Which bin should they go in ?
