Waitrose confirms payments back up as Co-op and Booths hit by global IT outage

Waitrose has confirmed its services are back up and are functioning “largely as normal” as Co-op, Booths and Naked Wines have also faced issues from today’s (19 June) global IT outage.

It follows reports that Waitrose was unable to take contactless card payments in some of its stores, with customers having to use alternative payment options instead. However the upmarket grocer has now reassured shoppers that its service are mostly restored and back to normal.

It is believed that the outage, which has impacted businesses across the world, was related to an issue at global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike and Microsoft.

A spokesperson for Waitrose told Grocery Gazette: “Waitrose is now taking contactless payments largely as normal, as well as still processing payments by Chip and PIN and cash. We’re also continuing to take orders via Waitrose.com.”

They added that Waitrose has been able to take card payments throughout the day via Chip and PIN, however had been “briefly limited on contactless payments,” while John Lewis was not impacted by the issue.

It comes as other supermarkets notified shoppers that they were working on rectifying any issues caused by the global IT outage, as businesses across the world scrambled to get their services back online.

Earlier this morning, Morrisons confirmed it had been experiencing issues, but has since resolved them. Meanwhile it is understood Co-op has faced difficulties, after it took to social media to apologise and promise customers it was working on creating a solution to the issues.

Co-op said on X: “We have been affected by the global IT outage, unfortunately. Hopefully the issues will be fixed soon!”. However, the retailer has since confirmed all cash and card payments are running as usual.

Similarly, Booths has notified social media users that it is “only accepting cash”.

Naked Wines also notified its customers that deliveries have been impacted due to delivery courier Yodel being affected by the global IT outage.

Despite the communication, the grocery retailers have been met with confusion from customers who voiced their anger on social media at various payment and online services being down this morning.

 

One shopper tweeted Sainsbury’s to ask: “What is happening? Why are customers holding on for over 25 minutes because our orders cannot be processed due to payment issues? Is your system down?”

However Sainsbury’s has confirmed they are currently not experiencing any issues. A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told Grocery Gazette: “We’re not seeing any impact to our stores but continue to closely monitor the situation.”

It is understood that retailers such as Tesco, Lidl, Iceland and Asda are currently not impacted.
