East of England Co-op to roll out ultra-rapid EV charge points

East of England Co-op has partnered with rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging network Osprey Charging to launch two ultra-rapid charge points.

Initially launching at the convenience retailer’s Burnham-on-Crouch store, more points will be rolled out to a further seven sites over coming months.

The 150kW charge points are dual charging, compatible with every EV on the market today and typically add 100 miles of range in around 15 minutes.

The partners said the move looks to boost access to reliable, convenient EV charging infrastructure and support UK-wide decarbonisation efforts.

East of England Co-op building and environmental compliance manager Steven Fendley said: “We are dedicated to helping our customers and communities to move over to electric vehicles and with our industry partners we are reviewing all our sites for suitability for EV charging.

“The new rapid-charging points are easy to use and offer customers a convenient opportunity to charge their vehicle while doing their shopping, or alternatively pick up a drink and something to eat whilst getting a needed charge.”

It follows similar moves by other retailers which have expanded their EV charging networks in recent months.

In January, Sainsbury’s launched a new EV charging business giving drivers access to ultra-rapid EV charging points in more than 20 stores, with plans to expand to over 750 bays at more than 100 stores by the end of 2024.

Last month, Tesco partnered with Vauxhall to encourage more customers to “make sustainable choices” and switch to electric vehicles, with the car company providing its new EV customers with one year’s free charging credit at the grocer’s stores across the country.
