Tuna giant Princes’ global food waste plummets

News

Canned food and drink manufacturer Princes has revealed its global food waste fell by 18% compared to the previous year.

In a new report, the FMCG giant also reported a 38% reduction against the group’s 2018/2019 baseline.

Breaking down the figures, Princes reported that out of the 58,575 tonnes of global food waste, 19,269 tonnes were sent to anaerobic digestion plants, 34,409 tonnes were recycled into bio-based materials, while 3,794 tonnes were reused as animal feed.

Other redistribution of food includes donating 192 tonnes to charities, such as the Polish Red Cross for those impacted by the conflict in Ukraine and the UK’s food waste charity Fareshare.

Princes corporate relations director David McDiarmid said: “Food waste reduction remains high on our agenda, and is something we are continuing to review and improve, across our operations.

“This is demonstrated by the continuous progress we’ve made over the past five years, and by our increased focus on consumer-focused campaigns designed to minimise waste at home. We’ve made significant progress achieving a 38% reduction to date, which puts us in a healthy position to achieve a 50% reduction by 2030.

“We know there is more work to be done, which is why we approach food waste as a farm-to-fork matter and engage with both our Fareshare Princes supply chain and consumers to encourage progress in these areas.”

Last year Princes, which was one of the major companies to support King Charles’ The Coronation Food Project, was recognised as one of the charity’s ‘leading food partners‘.
