Aldi crowned UK’s cheapest supermarket in February

Aldi has been crowned the UK’s cheapest supermarket in February, costing £140.51 for a basket of 72 popular groceries.

According to consumer watchdog Which?, the discount grocer was 30% less expensive than Waitrose, which was the priciest at £162.94 for the same basket.

Rival discounter Lidl took second place at less than £3 more expensive than Aldi for items including Heinz baked beans, milk and cheese.

Of the ‘big four’ full-line grocers, Asda was the least expensive at £140.51, closely followed by Tesco at £143.51 and Sainsbury’s at £147.78.

Morrisons and Ocado were found to be slightly more expensive at £151.73 and £153.47, respectively.

Which? retail editor Ele Clark told the Mirror: “Our latest research found that Aldi was the cheapest supermarket in February, with Lidl following closely behind.

“With food prices continuing to put immense pressure on household budgets, it’s no surprise to see many people turning to the discounters, especially as shoppers could save up to 30% by doing so.”

All four of the full-line grocers have now launched campaigns to price match Aldi or Lidl in a bid to win back shoppers.

In January, Asda became the first supermarket to price match both Aldi and Lidl on 287 everyday grocery products.

The following month, Morrisons launched a price match campaign, offering hundreds of weekly essentials at the same price or lower than Aldi and Lidl.
