Lidl ends Aldi’s 16-month run as UK’s cheapest supermarket

Lidl has ended Aldi’s 16-month run as the UK’s cheapest supermarket as it has been crowned the least expensive for a basket of 44 groceries in October by Which?.

A basket of goods at Lidl cost £74.58 on average across the month, however rival discounter Aldi was just 17p more expensive at £74.75.

However, the consumer watchdog found Waitrose to be 22% pricier than Lidl at £91.15, also making it the most expensive supermarket for October.

Lidl GB CEO, Ryan McDonnell said: “As we head into the festive season, we remain relentlessly focused on offering the lowest prices in the market. The latest Which? basket demonstrates that we’re delivering on our price promise and that customers can be confident they are getting the best value possible when they walk through our doors.”

When comparing a larger trolley of 135 items across the traditional grocer’s (excluding Aldi and Lidl), Asda was the cheapest at £328.42 – £10.98 more expensive than the next cheapest, Morrisons.

Waitrose was also found to be the most expensive for a larger trolley at £378.08 – £49.66 more than Asda.

Which? retail editor, Ele Clark, said: “As millions continue to struggle with increased food prices and other high household bills, it is no surprise that many are turning to discounters for their food shop. Our latest research has found Lidl is the cheapest supermarket for a basket of groceries, narrowly beating Aldi.

“Which? believes that supermarkets can do much more to help shoppers during the current cost-of-living crisis. They must ensure everyone has easy access to basic, affordable food ranges at a store near them – and this includes providing a decent choice of budget-range, healthy essentials in smaller convenience stores.”
