Tesco to cut price of kids’ toothbrushes and toothpaste by 20%

Tesco is reducing the price of its children’s Pro Formula Steps range by 20% to help in the fight against kids’ tooth decay.

As of yesterday (9 October), the leading retailer will be covering the VAT on seven lines including toothbrushes, toothpastes and mouthwash, with prices dropping to 80p, down from £1.

This comes as recent figures from the National Dental Epidemiology Programme found that 23.7% of 5-year-old children in England had experience of tooth decay.

Children living in the most deprived areas of the country were almost three times as likely to have experienced dental decay as those living in the least deprived areas.

Tesco head of health campaigns, Oonagh Turnball, said: “Parents who are struggling to make ends meet shouldn’t have to make the difficult choice between looking after their children’s teeth and affording the weekly shop.

“Healthy teeth and gums shouldn’t have to be a luxury, which is why we’re making our kids’ oral care range affordable as possible.”

This follows the supermarkets move to cover VAT tampons in 2017, on sunscreen in 2021, and on its F&F range of period pants in August 2023.
