Pot Noodle launches paper packaging trial in Tesco

Pot Noodle is trialling paper packaging across 500,000 of its Chicken & Mushroom flavoured pots exclusively in Tesco.

Made from FSC-certified paper, the pots feature a single layer of plastic film which acts as a protective barrier when water is added, The Grocer reported.

The pots can be recycled at home while sauce sachets can be recycled at soft plastic collection points.

The paper packaging, which has been in development by Pot Noodle owner Unilever for three years, will remain the same shape at the original plastic pots.

If the trial is successful, the consumer goods giant looks to roll out the change to the entire Pot Noodle range.

The brand has said this could prevent 4,000 tonnes of virgin plastic from being wasted every year.

This comes as in March, PepsiCo began trialling paper-based outer packaging across 300,000 of its Walkers Baked multipacks in Tesco stores and is trialling new ‘bagless’ multipacks across its rice cake brand, Snack A Jacks.

Confectionery maker Mars is also trialling recyclable paper packaging across its Mars chocolate bars in 500 Tesco stores, as the company looks to offer more environmentally friendly packaging.
