Hellmann’s mayonnaise jars slimmed down at Tesco in latest round of shrinkflation

Hellmann’s mayonnaise jars have been slimmed down, with the 800g products replaced with 600g versions at Tesco, as shrinkflation strikes again.

The new 600g jars are priced at £3.75 while the larger product cost £4.30. As a result, the product is now charging 9p more per 100g, The Telegraph reported.

Hellmann’s mayonnaise is one of many products that has experienced shrinkflation in recent months.

In February, standard packs of McVitie’s Digestives were cut from 400g to 360g and multi-packs of Penguin and Club biscuits were reduced from eight bars to seven.

At the time, the biggest factor for the change was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which pushed up the cost of commodity crops such as wheat and vegetable oils, which are widely used in the manufacture of Britain’s most popular biscuits.

Ingredients found in Hellmann’s mayonnaise such as olive oil and eggs have also seen price rises, with olive oil up 49% in the 12 months to March 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics.

“Our Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise jars are available in four sizes to suit varying shopper preferences and needs. This includes our 600g jar, which is available alongside our 800g, 400g, and 200g jars,” a Unilever spokesperson told The Telegraph.

“Although we are currently experiencing significant increases in input costs, including the costs of the quality ingredients used to make Hellmann’s mayonnaise, we will always try to absorb as much of the cost pressure ourselves and look for savings within our own business before passing on pricing to customers.”
