Lidl unveils priority store locations as it plans to reach 1,100 UK sites

Lidl has updated its list of priority locations for new stores as it looks to reach over 1,100 sites across the UK.

Last year, the discount grocer opened over 50 new stores and welcomed an additional 15 new sites within the last three months.

Lidl now has plans to expand further across Great Britain in the future, as it saw a record number of new shoppers to its stores in 2022 with over 1.4 million having switched to Lidl from other supermarkets.

For its national site requirements, the supermarket is looking for prominent areas that offer easy access, a strong pedestrian or traffic flow, unit sizes between 18,000 and 26,000 square feet and 100 or more parking spaces.

In a bid to roll out stores in priority locations, Lidl has unveiled an updated list of sites that span areas including Scotland, the north of England, Wales, the midlands, central England, as well as the east and south of England.

Lidl GB CEO, Ryan McDonnell said that despite a “challenging” few years, Lidl is “more committed than ever” to ensuring that every household can access one of the grocer’s stores.

“That’s why our focus is firmly on the future as we continue to grow and invest in our infrastructure, while keeping a lookout for more sites and locations across the country,” he added.

Lidl GB chief development officer, Richard Taylor said: “Our store expansion has been and continues to be unparalleled,” adding that Lidl “won’t be stopping there.”

“Our vision is to have over 1,100 stores in the future, but really there’s no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential. What’s important is that we take a strategic and sustainable approach to getting there.”
