Getir gives away free tinned tomatoes as demand soars by 239%

Getir is giving away free tinned tomatoes via its app as UK supermarkets face shortages of the fresh produce.

The ultrafast grocery delivery company has said over the past week, search demand for ‘tinned tomato recipes’ has skyrocketed by 239%, alongside searches for ‘tinned tomatoes’ spiking by 60%.

This comes as Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons have added purchase limits to tomatoes, as well as other veg including peppers and onions, in a bid to ration the limited supplies available.

When visiting the Getir app, shoppers will be able to receive two free tins of Cirio Cherry Tomatoes when spending a minimum of £25, available across London, Birmingham, Manchester, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool, Southampton, Portsmouth, Nottingham, Cambridge and Leicester.

“Here ar Getir, we are on a mission to give our customers as much value as we can,” the company said.

“The cost-of-living crisis and food shortages mean that it can be a struggle to get hold of much-needed essentials, so we want to help out.”

The move also comes as Getir hopes to offer a “healthy alternative” with tinned tomatoes featuring up to three times the amount of calcium and iron than fresh tomatoes.

“With tomato shortages gripping the nation, we hope this healthy alternative will provide some relief to Brits up and down the country.”

  • Quite ironic you have to be spending £25 for 2 tins if tomato’s. Who on earth will do that.
It’s cheaper to go and buy them, for less the 50p.

It’s quite surprising getir is commenting to the media in light of recent spate of articles relating to job cuts in the pipeline and the phrase ‘getir declined to comment’ commonly being used.

I don’t think a couple of Tin’s of tomatoes will ease the pain.

  • Tesco’s tomato tins cost 48p.

It’s considerably cheaper to go and buy.

Given the recent press news about jobs cuts and financial worries should you really be giving away tomatoes for free? I cannot see any financial benefit in a customer spending a certain limit to get 2 tins that can be brought from any supermarket for pennies.

Whoever is responsible for PR communications in getir really needs to be sectioned under the mental health act and stop shopping at Waitrose.
