Nisa’s charity MADL donated more than £1 million to local communities in 2022

Over £1 million was donated to local communities across the UK last year through Nisa’s Making a Difference Locally (MADL) charity.

In total, Nisa stores made 2,142 donations to good causes in 2022, totalling £1,085,828. The figures represent a 3.9% increase in the number of individual donations made and a 2.8% increase in the total figure donated when compared with 2021.

Since its formation in 2008, MADL has raised over £15m and supported local charities with more than 16,000 donations, ranging from foodbanks, health and wellbeing charities to refuges and youth sports teams.

MADL is Nisa’s registered charity, which enables independent retailers to donate money to their local communities. The retailers, all customers of the convenience retailer, raise funds through the sale of specific products in their stores and then choose a local beneficiary for the money.

The final quarter of the year was a strong period for the charity, with retailers keen to support local causes in time for the festive period, collectively donating £527,859.

“Thank you to all our retailers who supported their local communities last year and helped us to achieve this fantastic milestone,” head of charity at Nisa, Kate Carroll said.

She added: “We know that our retailers play a hugely important role in their respective communities, and I’m delighted they work so closely with MADL to raise the funding to donate to some wonderful causes which are hugely significant in their own local communities.”

Carroll commented that “lots of great work is already underway to make 2023 a truly impactful year,” saying that “we look forward to contributing further in the coming months.”

The news comes as the managing director of Nisa, Peter Batt, has warned that independent retailers will face the toughest six months in 30 years.
