McColl’s has been named one of the worst companies to work for, according to a new survey.

The symbol group retailer, which was snapped up by Morrisons last year after going into administration, was named in the top 10 worst places to work by job platform Breakroom.

The survey, based on reviews from Breakroom’s 430,000 UK shift workers revealed most shift workers regarded McColl’s pay as “bad”, 92% of people claiming they are paid below the Real Living Wage for where they live.

According to the research, shop assistants are being paid between £6 and £9.50 an hour while a manager gets between £8.52 and £12.42.

However, the Real Living Wage is £10.90 an hour and £11.95 for those living in London.

Employees also added that they often don’t get any more than four weeks’ notice of what shifts they are working.

Around 65% of people surveyed added that schedules change with one weeks notice or less, with others saying they are stressed, do not get proper breaks and do not feel well informed by head office

The news comes as, last year, McColls was named one of the companies which breached minimum wage requirements by the UK government.

Grocery Gazette has contacted McColl’s for comment.
