M&S is to close stores on Boxing Day and allowing staff to spend time with loved ones, after extending its Christmas opening hours.

The upmarket retailer will extend opening hours until 11pm at 300 of its UK stores from 19 to 23 December, as reported by Drapers.

The news comes at a time where M&S has announces it is donating 95,000 ambient products directly to charity, worth £50,000 to provide further support for those in need in the run up to Christmas.

M&S stores director Helen Milford said: “Our teams really step up over the festive period to help make Christmas special for our customers, including working extra hours so we can keep our store doors open for longer.”

She added: “It’s a busy time for retail so giving our colleagues Boxing Day off is a small thank you for their hard work delivering a remarkable Christmas for our customers.”

Last week, Marks & Spencer assigned a new product development director by promoting former head of product Kathryn Turner.
The retailer is also rolling out a trial to use paper bags in a select number of stores as it looks to reduce its plastic usage.
