Aldi has been named as the cheapest supermarket for a Christmas dinner this year as families look to cut costs amid the cost-of-living crisis.

According to research by self storage provider Ready Steady Store, for a family of six, the discount grocer costs £25.49 for a festive feast.

Comparing nine Christmas dinner staples, Asda came in closely behind at £26.97 followed by Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

A Christmas dinner at Waitrose amounted to £41.70 and M&S was found to be the most expensive of the seven grocery retailers surveyed at £46.85, £21.36 more than from Aldi.

For the price of a 400g self-branded Christmas pudding, Morrisons came in at the cheapest for £2, while a 200g jar of cranberry sauce cost less than £1 across each of the Big 4 grocers.

“Although it comes as no surprise that Aldi is vastly cheaper than the likes of Waitrose and Marks and Spencer, it is great to see that other leading supermarkets, like Tesco and Sainsburys have been competitive with costs this Christmas to ensure families can still enjoy and afford Christmas dinner,” Ready Steady Store director, Mehran Charania said.

“As a business leader, I have experienced first-hand the challenges of inflation and energy costs for staff and customers alike and hope more and more businesses can afford to do what they can to help people this Christmas.”
