Kevin the Carrot is back for Aldi Christmas 2022 World Cup advert, making a much-anticipated comeback in a 50-second teaser for the supermarket’s festive ad campaign.
Aldi is the only one of the UK’s supermarkets to make reference to this year’s Christmas World Cup in its festive advert campaign, while also bringing Kevin the Carrot and co back to our screens for the sixth consecutive year.
The teaser ad – named ‘Feast of Football – pays tribute to classic Christmas film Home Alone as well as Nike’s famous Airport 1998 World Cup ad and is the first part of a campaign that will develop as the World Cup progresses.
Aldi is expected to release the full advert later this month, although the exact date remains unknown.
The advert begins with Kevin and his family waiting in an airport departure lounge, before the carrot gets caught up in a kickabout with famous footballers including Ronaldi (a lemon), Messy, Macaroony, Beth Swede and Marrowdona.
As the game continues, Kevin sadly missed a shot – as well as his flight, leading to a nod to the iconic ‘Home Alone’ scene when Catherine O’Hara realizes her son has been left behind.
Aldi has been teasing shoppers about Kevin’s return for this year on Twitter, sharing pictures of a plane ticket with Kevin’s name on and a luggage tag attached to an orange suitcase.
Aldi UK marketing director Adam Zavalis said: “Christmas celebrates the joy of being with loved ones and this year more than ever we all need a bit of light entertainment as we celebrate the season together,”
“And it wouldn’t be the festive season without Kevin the Carrot on our TV screens, and this year’s Yuletide performance is sure to get the nation shouting ‘KEVIN!’ as we welcome him back for the seventh year.”
Kantar named last year’s Aldi Christmas advert – which was a version of Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol” featuring Marcus Radishford, Ebanana Scrooge and of course Kevin the Carrot – the ad most likely to deliver both long and short term.
