Morrisons chief operating officer Trevor Strain is reportedly in discussions to leave the supermarket giant, just weeks after Aldi replaced it as the UK’s fourth biggest grocer.
According to Sky News, Strain, who was previously Morrisons chief financial officer, is said to be finalising his departure, despite being touted as a potential replacement for Morrisons CEO David Potts, who is reportedly expected to resign soon.
Strain joined the company in 2009 as commercial and operations finance director, before being appointed as the groups finance director corporate in 2011, where he took responsibility of the company’s productivity programmes.
Strain joined the board as CFO in April 2013, before being appointed as Morrisons COO in 2019.
Prior to Morrisons, he worked at rival Tesco in a number of senior positions, which included UK property finance director and subsequently UK planning and reporting finance director.
The news comes as discount grocer Aldi overtook Morrisons as the UK’s fourth biggest supermarket, according to new data from Kantar.
