‘Sustainability is not a trend’, Sainsbury’s head warns

The head of buying and design of celebrations at Big 4 grocer Sainsbury’s, Abi Wilson, has warned that “sustainability is not a trend”.

Speaking at Forecasting The Future of Retail Through Consumer Trends panel at Brand Licensing Europe 2022, Wilson was joined by Hannah Craggs, head of subscription at TrendBible and Asha Bhalsod, the founder of Etopia Consultancy.

“Sustainability continues to be a very big thing,” Wilson said.

“I don’t really think until very recently, it has never really taken into consideration before the pandemic, but now of course it is a massive thing.”

Wilson added that when it comes to sustainability it is not only about the product, however it comes down to everything from the packaging it comes in to how it is delivered.

This comes as, just a few days ago, announced it is looking to to improve its Better for the Planet corporate sustainability agenda in preserving its water supply and reducing its water footprint.

As a result, it is looking to its employees and customers to help limit water wastage in a bid to hit its 2040 target of being water neutral.

Other sustainable moves made by the company include the launch of its ‘Sainsfreeze’ pop-up store, where it will be giving away free grocery products in a bid to reduce food waste.

The pop-up shop at Boxpark, Shoreditch is set to run from 27 to 28 September between 10am and 6pm, adding to Sainsbury’s commitment to halve food waste across its operations by 2030.
