Tesco ditches Pret A Manger concessions trial

Tesco has ended its in-store concessions trial with Pret A Manager after just over a year.

The Big 4 grocer and the coffee chain announced the trial in May last year, with the first concession launching in a month later.

However, only one more of the four planned shop-in-shops was ever opened in Peterborough.

The store operated as concessions were managed by Pret A Manger, in which coffee was served alongside other barista-prepared beverages and food-to-go items.

The end of the trial comes days after the supermarket giant announced it would be delisting Pret’s coffee range from its stores.

Launched in May 2020, the partnership was the first of many by coffee chain to diversify its product offering during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing customers to purchase branded retail packaged coffee directly from supermarkets.

However, Pret’s retail coffee range is still being sold at other UK supermarkets, including Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

The news comes as Pret A Manager announced a 230% increase in revenues to £357.8 million in the first six months of the year.

Yesterday, Tesco chair John Allan said the supermarket giant would “have to pass higher supply prices on to customers”.

Speaking to Kate McCann on Times Radio, the chair of the supermarket giant claims to “resist price increases” from its suppliers as long as the grocer “sensibly can”.

Grocery Gazette has contacted Tesco for comment.
