Leading craft brewery, Vault City Brewing has announced its collaboration with comedian, Ed Gamble to create a charity beer in celebration of the annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The ‘Canned Laughter’ limited-edition beer, made with apple and guava, will see 20% of sales donated to Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a charity providing advice to anyone who is struggling.
The product will also feature laughter as its special ingredient in a bid to ‘make people cheerful’ when drinking the beer.
An idea which stemmed from the Oslo Craft Beer Festival, co-founder Steven Smith-Hay learnt of “yeast screaming” an antient tradition said to enhance the strength and flavour of beer.
As a result, Gamble has been tasked to laugh into the tanks at Vault City Brewery during production.

“As an Edinburgh brewery, we had to mark the Fringe, and what better way to do it than with a collab beer with my favourite comedian,” Smith-Hay said.
“We sent him beers, then invited him into the brewery. One thing led to another and we decided to brew a beer together. We discussed his favourite flavours and beers in great detail before settling on the recipe. We’re buzzing with how it turned out.”
Gamble added: “Vault City is one of my favourite breweries – their creativity knows no bounds and this beer might be their most imaginative yet.
“I might start laughing into all my drinks now, as I genuinely think it does improve the flavour.
“I can’t wait to hear what people think of the beer. CALM is a charity close to my heart so I am always keen to help out whenever I can.”
The 4.2% ABV beer went on sale 19 August via Vault City’s website and across bottle shops.
