Aldi holds its title as the UK’s cheapest supermarket

Aldi has been announced as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for the second month in row, beating Lidl by just £1.38 for an average shop.

Aldi’s average price of 47 items came in at £74.23. Despite the discount retailer‘s prices up £1.38 from last month and £47.57 since April, its shoppers can save £25.23 in comparison to Waitrose, listed as the most expensive retailer surveyed by consumer watchdog, Which? in July.

Following closely behind in second place was Lidl at £75.61, as it was overtaken by Aldi last month.

The average basket price at Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco fell between £80-90, while Morrisons was found to be the priciest of the Big 4 grocer‘s at £91.14, just £8.32 behind Waitrose.

According to figures by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), food inflation rose by 7% in July with levels set to remain high during 2023.

“We know that across the nation many families are finding things tough due to the cost of living crisis,” Aldi managing director of buying, Julie Ashfield said.

“At Aldi, we’re determined to help by keeping costs low and quality high for our customers. We’re thrilled to yet again be named the UK’s cheapest supermarket.”

This news comes as Aldi has scrapped its packaging-free store trial in Ulverston, Cumbria. Now looking into its future sustainability plans, the trial aimed to reduce waste and encourage sustainable shopping among its customers.
