Spar to clear several miles of coastline in clean-up initiative

Spar has announced its involvement in the Million Mile Clean initiative, where its stores along the UK’s coastlines will be organising and taking part in coastal clean-ups.

The convenience group started its first clean-up in June for World Ocean Day and will now continue the initiative over the summer, working alongside environmental marine company, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS).

The Million Mile Clean, which aims to see 100,000 volunteers walking 10 miles whilst cleaning the UK’s coastline, will provide each Spar store partaking with necessary tools and kits including rubble sacks, gloves and first aid kits for up to 30 volunteers.

The initiative has already seen clean-ups at seven coastal sites including Seaton Carew in County Durham, Southsea beach in Portsmouth and five beaches across Northern Ireland.

“We have arranged with Surfers Against Sewage that Spar stores can sign up to participate in the Million Mile Clean. This is an initiative that involves bringing our communities together as well helping the environment,” Spar UK, brand and marketing director, Suzanne Dover, said.

“We are delighted to see eleven Spar stores already getting behind this initiative and helping to clean up their local beaches. It has made an enormous difference to local communities.”

Million Mile Clean co-founder, Jack Middleton added: “At Surfers Against Sewage our aim is to make the UK a cleaner, greener place for everyone to enjoy. We’re mobilising 100,000 people each year to get out there and protect the areas they love.

“Our campaign reconnects communities with the environment and makes it as easy as possible to do and feel good. Beach cleaning boosts your mental health and wellbeing and provides a great opportunity to meet likeminded people.”
