Waitrose owner awarded menopause friendly employer accreditation

Waitrose’s parent company, John Lewis Partnership has been awarded the Menopause Friendly Employer accreditation for its supportive and inclusive workplace for women.

The award, presented by The Menopause Friendly’s independent panel of experts, aims to signify businesses that puts diversity, inclusion and colleagues’ wellbeing centre stage.

This accreditation supports a comfortable environment in which women and their managers can openly talk about the often-taboo subject.

The UK’s largest employee-owned business, the John Lewis Partnership has over 42,000 female employees and in support of the initiative, has introduced a support package for partners.

Including guidance for managers, nutrition and health information, access to free mental health support and in-house help from its occupational health and wellbeing team, the retailer is also updating its policies on flexible working and taking time off.

“Workplace support is vital for those experiencing symptoms of the menopause and I welcome the commitment that The John Lewis Partnership have made to their employees,” All Parliamentary Group on Menopause chair, Carolyn Harris said.

“Too many women have suffered due to a lack of understanding from their employer and we know that one in ten menopausal women have felt forced to leave the workforce as a result.”

“By introducing some simple changes employers like The John Lewis Partnership will benefit from being able to retain experienced and loyal employees at the peak of their careers.”

Menopause Friendly independent panel member and Mills & Reeve LLP partner, Jog Hundle added: “We’re delighted to see the John Lewis Partnership achieve our Menopause Friendly Accreditation. Their application was outstanding and they’ve made such a difference for their colleagues. They set clear objectives to create a movement to normalise menopause, with strong senior leadership support.”

“They’ve demonstrated excellent menopause awareness, education and support within their organisation, creating a culture where menopause is easy to talk about and support is available. Well done to everyone involved.”
