Co-op launches ‘walking deliveries’ from 200 stores this year

The Co-op is set to become the first UK supermarket to launch “walking deliveries” for households and workplaces up to a 15-minute walk from its stores.

The Symbol group retailer is expected to operate from 200 stores this year following successful trials in Cornwall.

The roll-out is expected to include smaller towns and rural villages in “quick delivery deserts”, which are often considered “offline” by rapid delivery companies who mainly operate in urban areas, according to the Co-op.

Orders made via Co-op’s online store will be loaded onto an ergonomically designed trolley, and hauled by a member of staff to customer doorsteps.

Deliveries will be made the same day orders come in and typically in less than two hours.

Furthermore, the grocer revealed plans to grow its online business revenue by a further 50% to £300 million by the end of this year, with online services now available in over 2,000 of its stores in towns, villages and cities.

Earlier this week, the retailer expanded its partnership with robot delivery firm Starship Technologies, bringing automated grocery deliveries to Cambourne.

“Co-op stores across the country are well placed to serve shoppers locally and a key part of our strategy is to develop our ecommerce offer, using the competitive advantage of our store footprint to provide fast home deliveries, click and collect and added services,” Co-op’s ecommerce director Chris Conway said.

“We know that as a convenience retailer, the ability to pop into their local Co-op will always be important to customers, but we also know that they want flexible options online, and so we continue to work to meet customer needs, however, and wherever they choose to shop with us.”
