Waitrose hires Dan Walker as new columnist

Waitrose has welcomed Dan Walker as Waitrose Weekend’s newest sports columnist, with his first column in the supermarket’s weekly newspaper being published on 17 March.

The publication can be picked up for free in Waitrose stores across the UK, but can also be read online.

Walker is set to share his role with Clare Balding and will be joining other Waitrose Weekend columnists and contributors such as Chris Packham, Alvin Hall, Ritulah Shah and Mariella Frostrup.

Prior to joining the supermarket’s weekly newspaper offering, Walker has worked as a presenter, sports journalist and was also a quarter-finalist on Strictly Come Dancing.

“I’m really excited about it,” Walker said in an interview in last week’s edition of the Waitrose Weekend.

“I’ve covered every sport under the sun during my career – I’ve done Wimbledon, the Six Nations, World Cups, rowing, golf…I’m looking forward to bringing all of that to the Weekend audience.”

A Waitrose spokesperson added that Walker’s love of sport began in childhood and he’s been obsessed with all sports ever since – making him suitable for the role.

The news comes as Waitrose was forced to reverse some changes to its newly relaunched customer loyalty programme by reintroducing printed vouchers following “thousands” of complaints in just a matter of days.

The new loyalty scheme included scrapping free newspaper perks in order to deliver personalised and exclusive offers.
