Soft plastics collected from customers at Tesco stores is now being sent to Berry Global’s state-of-the-art recycling facility, where it will be cleaned and processed before being turned into bin liners.
Tesco has rapidly scaled up the amount of soft plastic collection points it offers instore, with the recycling option now available in over 900 stores. Around 30 tonnes of bread bags, fruit, vegetable and salad packaging are collected per month, with more than 850 tonnes of soft plastic collected to date.
The two companies have been working closely together to ensure there is full traceability of the collected soft plastics through the supply chain.
“After doing everything possible to remove and reduce plastic from our stores, we want to ensure that materials are recycled into new products and packaging,” commented Tesco sustainability packaging manager William Guest.
“Our soft plastic collection points help to plug the gap in the country’s recycling infrastructure, and when combined with initiatives like this, we meet our customers’ ask that materials do not go to waste.”
Tesco also has several other partnerships and recycling solutions in the pipeline.
