The Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) director of global affairs Steve Wearne has been elected chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) in Geneva, Switzerland.

He joins the position from his current role as vice-chairperson, which he has held since 2017.

Wearne has already announced three priorities for his tenure at the organisation, including “Bring the Codex strategy to life”, “Build participation” and “Be a credible leader and advocate.”

According to the FSA, Wearne’s priority will reportedly see the Codex “lead, not follow” as it responds to changes in the food system concerning consumer health protection and fair trade.

He also aims to “nurture, renew and grow” the colleague relationships within the organisation, and reportedly hopes to capitalise on the increased participation facilitated by virtual meetings over the Covid-19 pandemic.

He concluded that his final goal would have him draw on his experience within the industry to lead and advocate for the group’s continued expansion as he takes on the new role.

“It is a huge honour to have been elected as the next chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission,” Wearne said.

“[It] will be a privilege to continue to serve alongside colleagues across the world to make sure safe food is a right we can all enjoy.

“My commitment as chairperson-elect … is to be impartial and to work tirelessly to deliver an inclusive, transparent and resilient Codex respected through the world for its commitment to science-based food standards.”

FSA chief executive Emily Miles added: “This is well deserved.

“I know Steve will continue to bring his expertise, intelligence and leadership to the commission and its work to ensure safe, good quality food for everyone, everywhere.”
