Tesco online director Rimal Patel has resigned from the Big 4 grocer to join lifestyle retailer Joules.

In his new position as wholesale and partnerships director, effective from August 16, Patel will head up the Joules’ work with third-party businesses in the UK and overseas.

Patel has been with the Big 4 grocer for nine years, where he held senior positions such as online director and head of strategy. He joined in 2012 as senior strategy manager.

Prior to Tesco, he held senior positions at Shop Direct Group, John Lewis and PwC.

Joules said Patel would be “responsible for strengthening and driving Joules’ partnerships both in the UK and target international markets”.

He will report directly to chief executive Nick Jones.

The news comes after Amazon hired a veteran Tesco executive, Tony Hoggett, to run its bricks-and-mortar operation, marking the most recent skirmish between the two retail giants.
