Tesco shoppers urged to donate to food collection

Charities are urging shoppers to contribute to Tesco’s food collection for struggling families this summer across the UK.

The Big 4 grocer will be running its collection for three days from July 15 to support FareShare and the Trussell Trust at all of its large stores.

Tesco express outlets will also be collecting donations over the summer from July 12 until August 28.

The charities are asking customers to donate food items with a long shelf-life, which will be used for children’s holiday clubs and food parcels by FareShare, and donated to food banks owned by the Trussell Trust.

Customers will be met at the door with a list of in-demand items and asked if they would like to purchase one as a donation.

Those who can’t donate in-store are being encouraged to donate Tesco Clubcard vouchers via the Tesco Clubcard online site instead.

Tesco will also add 20 per cent of the total value of donations on top of customer contributions.

“The items we receive from the Tesco Food Collection will help us to support a huge range of organisations working with children and families, from school holiday activity clubs and playgroups to breakfast and after school clubs,” FareShare chief executive Lindsay Boswell said.

“Your donations will make such a big difference to thousands of children at risk of going hungry this summer, so if you’re able to purchase just one item in your local Tesco store we would be so thankful.”

Trussell Trust chief executive Emma Revie added: “Food banks do all they can to help families meet the extra financial pressures of the summer holidays.

“By donating during the Tesco summer food collection this July, you will help your local food bank provide the best possible support to families in crisis today, while working towards a future where everyone has enough for the essentials.”
