Southern Co-op to give 10,000 shoppers their groceries for free
Southern Co-op has launched a summer giveaway across 173 stores that will see up to 10,000 customers receive their shopping for free.
The group’s “Pop in and Win” campaign will run until 21 August, with winners selected automatically at random when paying at staffed or self-service checkouts.
Customers must spend at least £1 on qualifying products to be entered, with the retailer’s till system determining whether their basket will be paid for. No action or manual selection is required from store staff.
Alcohol, tobacco, baby formula, lottery tickets, gift cards, fuel and a range of other services are excluded from the free-shop promotion and must still be paid for by customers.
The campaign is available at Southern Co-op-owned food stores but excludes its franchised Welcome shops and home-delivery orders.
Alongside the in-store promotion, shoppers can enter an online draw without making a purchase, with 50 winners set to receive a £30 Southern Co-op gift card.
Southern Co-op will also donate £1 to the Retail Trust for every free shop awarded, up to a maximum contribution of £10,000. The charity provides financial, emotional and practical support to people working across the retail industry.
Southern Co-op head of store operations Anuj Christie said the summer holidays could be a particularly difficult period for families facing the cost of feeding and entertaining children.
He added that the initiative was designed to create moments of “surprise and delight” for shoppers while supporting retail workers through the business’s partnership with the Retail Trust.
The giveaway follows a similar festive campaign, during which Southern Co-op paid for hundreds of customers’ Christmas shops and distributed £75,000 in grants to community organisations through its Winter Fund.
Southern Co-op operates 173 company-owned food stores across the south of England and forms part of a wider business spanning convenience retail, funeral services and coffee shops.
