Tesco has launched a wedding gift registry packed with practical essentials, including bin liners, toothpaste and a six-month supply of toilet rolls, after research showed couples want useful gifts over luxury items.

The UK’s leading supermarket has created six curated gift bundles on registry platform Prezola, with prices ranging from £39 for a tea-and-biscuits pack to £72 for a dine-in meal deal selection featuring Tesco Finest wines and ready meals.

A £63 “Really Useful Stuff” bundle includes kitchen towels, antibacterial handwash and 60 rolls of luxury loo paper, a far cry from more traditional wedding gifts, such as dinner service sets.

Tesco said the new service reflected the “real needs of modern couples” navigating rising living costs, and was prompted by research into couple’s desired presents.

A poll commissioned by the grocer found 88% of newlyweds or engaged couples now favour practicality over extravagance, with nearly half citing financial pressures. Just 8% wanted fine china, while 18% said they’d prefer a year’s worth of free groceries.

Tesco said 63% of recipients felt the financial implications of their big day had caused them stress, with it taking an average of a year to pay off, and 93% said having a stockpile of everyday essential products would help them reduce their monthly outgoings.

“While toilet roll and teabags might not immediately seem like the most romantic option, it’s clear from our research that these are the products that could help to get married life off to a brilliant start,” said a Tesco spokesperson.
