Pilgrim’s Europe has agreed to acquire Walkers Deli & Sausage Company from Samworth Brothers.

The transaction remains subject to Competition and Markets Authority approval and employee consultation.

Leicester-based Walkers Deli & Sausage employs around 1,150 people and produces premium sausages, sliced cooked meats, cooked bacon, snacking products and pâté for major UK retailers.

The business, which traces its heritage back to 1824, is also a significant supplier of premium own-label products.

Pilgrim’s Europe said the acquisition would expand its footprint in the UK, strengthen its integrated supply chain and build on an existing long-term supply relationship between the two companies.

Pilgrim’s Europe president Ivan Siqueira said: “Walkers Deli & Sausage is a fantastic business with a proud heritage, a highly skilled team and a strong reputation for quality and innovation.

“This acquisition is a natural strategic fit for Pilgrim’s Europe. We already have a well-established supply relationship with Walkers Deli & Sausage and see significant opportunities to build on the strengths of both businesses.”

He added that bringing the company into Pilgrim’s Europe would enable it to expand further into “attractive premium pork categories” and enhance its ability to serve customers across the UK.

For Samworth Brothers, the disposal will allow it to focus investment on other areas of its portfolio, including food-to-go, savoury pastry, meals and brands.

Samworth Brothers chief executive Simon Wookey said: “As the protein sector has become increasingly specialised and integrated, we believe Walkers Deli & Sausage is well positioned for its next phase of growth as part of a business with protein at its core and expertise across the supply chain.

“This transaction enables Samworth Brothers to focus investment on the significant growth opportunities we see across Food to Go, Savoury Pastry, Meals and our portfolio of Brands.”

Pilgrim’s Europe said its immediate priority following completion would be to support Walkers Deli & Sausage employees through the transition while maintaining service and product quality for customers.

The companies said the combined business would be positioned to drive further innovation and expand its offer across the UK market.
