Aldi to give away free strawberries as Wimbledon demand surges
Aldi is giving away thousands of free strawberries at its Wimbledon store this week as it looks to tap into demand around the tennis tournament.
The company said shoppers visiting the branch between Monday 29 June and Friday 3 July will be able to pick up free strawberries to mark the start of Wimbledon.
Aldi is also selling its Nature’s Pick British Strawberries for 99p for a 227g punnet across stores nationwide.
The supermarket said the price is 55 per cent cheaper than equivalent punnets at M&S.
Aldi sold almost 1,700 tonnes of strawberries during Wimbledon last year, equivalent to around 4.5m punnets.
It expects more than five million punnets to be sold over the tournament this year, as strawberries remain one of the staple summer products for shoppers watching the tennis at home.
The retailer said demand was being supported by health-conscious consumers looking for naturally sweet snacks, as well as social media trends around strawberry-based recipes.
Alongside its 99p Nature’s Pick British Strawberries, Aldi is selling Everyday Essentials Wonky Strawberries for £1.19, Nature’s Pick British Strawberries in 400g packs for £1.99, 600g packs for £2.79, and Specially Selected British Grown Strawberries for £2.85.
The full strawberry range is available in stores nationwide now.
