Aldi was named the cheapest supermarket in the UK in March ahead of Lidl, according to research from consumer group Which?.

The consumer group compared the prices of over 200 branded and private-label products over the month, and Aldi took the title of most affordable supermarket in March.

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said: “Being named the UK’s cheapest supermarket once again is fantastic news for our shoppers, especially at a time when many are looking to make their money go further.

“We’re proud to offer consistently low prices without compromising on quality, and our Easter Super Six shows just how affordable it can be to enjoy a traditional family roast.”

The average price of a shopping basket with 95 items cost shoppers an average of £171.32, while Lidl with a loyalty card was 99p more expensive.

Lidl prices without a loyalty card were third with an average cost of £172.41, while Asda was fourth at an average price of £193.37.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s with loyalty discounts were in fifth and sixth place, costing £198.07 and £199.79, respectively.

High street retailer Waitrose was the most expensive at £235.70 for 95 items, marking the third consecutive month this year.

Online retailer Ocado was the second most expensive supermarket with the average price of a shopping basket costing £219.86.
