Tesco reveals plans for eco-friendly distribution centre
Tesco has announced its plans to develop a new distribution centre at DP World London Gateway, which is set to open in 2029.
The new distribution centre will be eco-friendly and have energy-efficient technology as part of Tesco’s goals of being committed to sustainable practices.
The retailer also doubled down on investing in its sustainable goals by launching solar-powered refrigerators in their delivery fleet.
Additionally, according to the company, the new location is set to receive a BREEAM Outstanding certification, which shows its commitment to maintaining sustainability in its new developments.
Andrew Woolfenden, Tesco UK Distribution & Fulfilment Director, said: “Our distribution network is vital for ensuring customers receive products at the right place, time, and condition.

“As demand grows across our store network, we’re excited to partner with Witron and DP World to develop a distribution centre that leverages the latest technology, enhancing our supply chain and supporting our decarbonisation goals. By locating at London Gateway, we can also take full advantage of the seaport and rail infrastructure.”
The new site is part of Tesco’s long-term business plan to develop an expansive supply chain network that supports its growing brick-and-mortar fleet.
Tesco announced that the distribution centre is being developed in partnership with logistics partner Witron.
Tesco’s supermarket rival Waitrose also recently announced plans to open a new multimillion-pound distribution centre in Bristol.
Online grocery retailer Ocado also received approval to develop a new distribution hub in Nottinghamshire in March.
