Lidl calls staff back to office to ‘align with rest of sector’
Lidl has tightened its hybrid home-working policy for head office staff, in a move that brings the discounter in line with several other major supermarkets over recent weeks.
The shift, first reported by Retail Week, will see Lidl require head office employees to attend the office at least three days a week, up from the previous two-day minimum introduced during the Covid pandemic.
A Lidl spokesperson said the change followed a staff consultation process and was intended to provide “consistency” and “clarity” for colleagues, while “aligning [Lidl] with the majority of the sector”.

“After listening to feedback and looking at working preferences across our workforce, it became clear that our colleagues value a true mix of home and office working,” the spokesperson added.
“Therefore, earlier in the year, we updated our policy so that colleagues have consistency and clarity, while continuing to benefit from flexibility to support collaboration and development in the workplace as well as balance at home.”
Lidl’s decision follows similar moves from other grocery retailers. Last week, Morrisons ended its 4.5 day working week policy for head office staff, ordering a return to five-day office working patterns, while Ocado recently updated its policy from one day per week to a minimum of three.
