Asda has appointed James Goodman as its new chief people officer, replacing Hayley Tatum.

Goodman joins the grocer from Tesco, where he spent twelve years, most recently as the people director for the UK and ROI.

Previously, Goodman also worked in Shanghai as Tesco’s home and clothing division sourcing director, as well as over 7 years at fashion giant Gap, holding roles including senior HR.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming James to Asda later this year,” said new executive chairman Allan Leighton.

“He brings a huge amount of experience with him and will be a vital part of the leadership team as we continue to rebuild and deliver on our ambition to once again be the best place to work in the UK.”

Goodman added: “I’m thrilled to be joining Asda and – most of all – being able to introduce myself to the wonderful colleagues that power Asda day in and day out.

“Asda is a great business and I can’t wait to roll my sleeves up and join Allan and the rest of the leadership team on our mission to return Asda to where it belongs, as a champion for hard working families and a brilliant place to work.”

Goodman’s appointment follows Hayley Tatum’s decision to leave Asda earlier this week, after 14 years with the business.

It also comes amid a slew of new senior appointments at the supermarket chain, since chairman Leighton joined the business late last year.
