Asda has partnered with social supermarket Community Shop to open a new store in Leeds, the city that the grocer was founded in.

The store, located in Swarcliffe, north Leeds, is the first to be funded by Asda and will provide the local community with access to discounted surplus products, affordable hot meals, skills workshops and further learning opportunities.

Asda has provided funding towards fixtures and fittings of the Swarcliffe store, and has donated surplus products to the social supermarket for the past decade.

Community Shop Swarcliffe marks the 14th site in the UK and is made up of three spaces – Community Store, Community Hub and Community Kitchen. The space will provide members with access to discounted food and essentials, including fruit, vegetables and bread for only 20p.

The profits from the store will be reinvested into Community Hub, which will deliver holistic support and development, providing members with personal tools to improve their own circumstances and address the causes of their food insecurity, in a supportive, safe environment.

The Community Kitchen will provide a café that enables people to connect with others and learn through food, as well as providing home-cooked meals for the community with kids eating free every day.
