Aldi shoppers purchasing Too Good To Go Surprise Bags have made savings of over £17m since its partnership with the surplus food platform began in February 2023.

The supermarket chain has now sold over one million of the Surprise Bags, which contain a range of grocery products that are approaching their sell-by date, and are sold for £3.30, promising at least £10 worth of food.

Aldi said its surplus food bags were most popular in December, with over 10,000 saved on Christmas Eve.

Aldi UK national sustainability director Luke Emery said: “It’s incredible that more than a million of our Surprise Bags have now been saved by Aldi customers, helping to make a real difference when it comes to cutting down on food waste.

“It’s a partnership we’re proud of and it’s great to be able to pass even more savings on to our customers as part of our longstanding commitment to provide high quality food at affordable prices.”

Too Good To Go UK country director Sophie Trueman added: “It’s fantastic to see our partnership with Aldi continue to pave the way for a more sustainable future with more than one million Surprise Bags saved in the UK.

“At Too Good To Go, our mission is to make sure good food is enjoyed, not wasted. Our app users get great meals at a great price, businesses reach new customers and recover sunk costs, and we’re reducing the harmful impact of food waste on our planet – it really is a win-win.”

The scheme follows similar initiatives launched by the retailer, such as its partnership with surplus food redistribution platform Neighbourly, which will see Aldi donating surplus food, volunteering and providing financial donations as part of the ‘GoGive’ campaign this winter.

Sounds like an amazing win, win scheme. Aldi win, because they are not just dumping out of date food (although i understand they already work with several homeless charaties foodwise) and we, the customers win because we are getting great grub at knock down prices and lets be true, whovdoesn’t like a bargain. Great shop with plenty of variety and friendly staff. Only way they could be any better would be to improve upon the bicycle parking provision, which althoug small is usually packed out with unnecessary overflow of compost bags, sacks of kindling and any other thing they couldn’t organise properly. Also, when i had a saddle gel cover stolen and saddle slashed, they said their security cameras didn’t cover the bike stand.
