Aldi scraps coloured milk caps in all UK stores to save on plastic

Aldi is scrapping its colourless milk caps across all 990 UK stores in a bid to further improve the recyclability of its milk cartons.

Following a successful trial last year, the German discounter is now introducing the caps on all its milk ranges as they are easier to recycle.

The new milk caps started appearing in Aldi stores this week, as the retailer has partnered with several suppliers to tackle plastic pollution in the UK.

Aldi first trialled removing coloured milk caps in August last year, where stores across in Cheshire, Manchester and Liverpool saw the new change.

The roll out will mean a further 200 tonnes of High-Density Polythene (rHDPE) in the bottle tops can be reused to create new milk bottles.

Customers will be able to distinguish the milk type via the labels, which will remain red, green or blue depending on the fat content.

The news come as German discounters Aldi and Lidl become more popular than ever for UK shoppers, with both now accounting for 17.8% of the total retail market share in the UK.

“At Aldi we are constantly reviewing ways to become a more sustainable supermarket and cut down on single-use plastic,” plastics and packaging director at Aldi, Luke Emery said.

“That means working closely with our suppliers to find solutions that will make a real difference.

“Improving the recyclability of packaging on an everyday product like milk has been well received by our customers, who are increasingly aware of products being environmentally friendly,” Emery added.
