Lidl and Sainsbury’s have become the latest supermarkets to join Aldi, to cut the price of Christmas vegetables to 19p each, marking the start of the annual supermarket price war.

As retailers battle it out to become the cheapest during the festive season, the price of vegetables have sunk to their lowest price of the year as they look to offer consumers as much value as possible.

Currently, discount supermarket Lidl has reduced the price of its carrots (1kg), parsnips (500g) mini roasts (1.5kg), swede and Brussels sprouts (500g). These prices will be available in stores from December 15, until stocks last.

Big 4 grocer Sainsbury’s has made similar moves, with its reduced Christmas veggies available on store shelves from December 18.

Customers will be able to get carrots (1kg), parsnips (500g), white potatoes (2.5kg), Brussels sprouts (500g), red and white cabbages and swede for 19p each.

The selection from German discounter Aldi includes carrots (1kg), white potatoes (2kg), parsnips (500g), red and white cabbages (each), Brussels sprouts (500g), and swede (each).

Aldi shoppers will also be able to find these prices in stores from December 18.

The update comes as Aldi kickstarted the annual Christmas supermarket price war yesterday, with the return of its traditional festive food discounts.

Running throughout the week leading up to Christmas – from Sunday 18 December until Saturday 24 December 24 – the discounted vegetables also form part of Aldi’s year-round ‘Super 6’ fruit and veg price cuts.
