Lidl’s deposit return scheme set to trial in England stores

Discount retailer Lidl is looking to implement its deposit return scheme (DRS) across stores in England, according to planning applications.

The scheme – which allows customers to return undamaged plastic, glass or aluminium containers to a Lidl machine in exchange for a 10p voucher – is set to be added to its West Town Lane, Brislington and Southmead Road stores in Bristol, as reported by The Grocer.

“We are preparing for the future implementation of DRS across England but are still awaiting further clarity and guidance from government,” a Lidl spokeswoman said.

Looking to encourage recycling among consumers, the scheme – which first launched across Scotland in 2021 – is now available in six of the retailer’s stores.

The spokesperson added: “We had a great response to the trial, and each customer that participated has played a big part in helping us to shape the future of DRS at Lidl.

“We’re pleased to confirm that the recycling points will remain in place, meaning that customers can continue recycling their goods ahead of the official DRS rollout next year.”

Scotland is set to go live with its deposit return scheme on 16 August 2023, a year after its initial implementation date which was postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Circular Economy Minister, Lorna Slater announced in parliament last year that the scheme has a target of achieving 90% collection rates by 2024.
