Supermarket milk prices rise above 9.1% inflation level

Many UK supermarkets have increased milk prices, rising above the current level of inflation, as families struggle to cope with the cost-of-living crisis.

Each of the Big 4 grocers has increased its milk prices by 10%, with two pints costing £1.15, up from £1.05 last Friday.

Following on from Sainsbury’s, which was the first supermarket to raise its milk prices, discount retailer Aldi has since matched this, seeing a 16% rise above its usual cost of 99p for two pints of semi skimmed milk.

The current inflation rate, which rose to 9.1% this month is set to increase to 11% in winter and won’t hit its peak until 2023, as warned by data analysts.

Other dairy products, including butter and cheese, have also seen staggering price rises with butter brand, Lurpak costing above £9 in some grocers.

“We are working closely with our farmers to help them navigate the significant cost pressures we understand they are facing, while continuing to invest in keeping prices as low and competitive for our customers as we can,” a Sainsbury’s spokesman told The Sun.

Also commenting on the issue, an Arla spokesman told The Sun: “The cost of living squeeze is putting real pressure on households at the same time, the cost of producing milk has increased to an all-time high and our farmers are struggling to cover their costs, which is resulting in less milk being produced.

“The cost increases that we are seeing on farm are so significant we do have to pass some of these on to ensure our farmers can continue the supply of products into the shops.”
