Asda opens largest ‘On The Move’ store on EG forecourt

Asda has opened its largest ‘On The Move’ convenience store on an EG Group forecourt, taking the total number of Asda-branded convenience stores to 32.

The 5,000 sq ft store, based in Retford, Nottinghamshire, offers more than 2,500 Asda own-brand and branded items, including Extra Special, fresh and chilled products. It will also offer EG Group’s foodservice brands Leon and KFC.

The launch provides further evidence of the strength of the partnership between the supermarket and EG Group, both owned by the Issa brothers. The site is the latest Asda On the Move store to open on an EG forecourt, with the aim of launching up to 300 in the future.

The store includes click and collect for Asda.com and George.com, as well as Asda’s toyou parcel service which offers collection and returns across more than 100 brands, following a successful trial across four existing stores.

The UK’s second largest bakery chain, EG Group-owned Cooplands, will open a café inside the store in the second half of April, offering hot food-to-go options.

The Retford site will also have two electric vehicle charging points, in line with EG’s agenda to roll out modern charging facilities throughout its estate.

“The launch of our largest-ever Asda On The Move with EG Group marks an important step in Asda’s commitment to ensure more customers have greater access to our extensive range of value products and services – whether on the move, online, in-store, or via click and collect,” said Oliver Silvester, head of Asda On The Move.

“Our partnership with EG Group makes this possible and combines our expertise in food retail with EG’s roster of innovative and well-known foodservice brands.”

EG Group head of retail integration Barry Westley said: “We are excited to partner with Asda on the opening of the most ambitious Asda On The Move store to date.

“There is a real opportunity to bring customers something different by combining our experience in foodservice and convenience retailing with a carefully curated range of Asda products and services.

“The complementary strengths of both EG Group and Asda enable us to make it even more convenient for motorists to access everything they need when they fill up with fuel.”
