EXCLUSIVE: Morrisons to axe 160 McColl’s head office roles
Morrisons is to cut 160 McColl’s head office roles as it continues to set out plans to integrate the convenience store chain into its grocery business.
The supermarket chain rescued the symbol group retailer from administration earlier this year in a £190m rescue bid which saved around 16,000 jobs at the time.
Since then, it has revealed it will be closing 132 loss-making McColl’s stores, putting 1,300 jobs at risk.
The latest development has revealed that “around 160 roles” will be lost, as McColl’s Brentwood head office is permanently closed and relocated to Morrisons’ head office, in Bradford.
It is believed that only 30 roles will be available at the new location and a number of other changes are also being made across the rest of the business.

A Morrisons spokesperson confirmed the latest plans to Grocery Gazette, saying:
“As we continue to integrate McColl’s into Morrisons and improve its performance, we’ve taken the decision to close the McColl’s Brentwood office which, together with some other changes in the Stockport office and field teams, will regrettably involve the removal of around 160 roles.”
A consultation period is currently underway.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) cleared Morrisons’ acquisition in October last year, after it said it would sell 28 stores from McColl’s existing estate in a bid to address competition concerns.

Why does Grocery Gaette refer to McColls as a symbol group? It isn’t and never has been.
This integration was inevitable. Having working with many of those affected in the structure changes there are some fantastic people out there who will be soon available. The challenges McColl’s business has faced over recent years has been epic and these colleagues weathered the storm and came through it.
Glad to see morrisons making the right decision to get rid of the dead weight.
