A $7.5 billion grocery startup has expanded to the US just ten months after launching internationally.

Getir, which is based in Istanbul, has begun operations in Chicago and hopes to reach New York and Boston by the end of the year.

“Just like every basketball player dreams of playing in the NBA, a startup dreams of playing in the US,” founder Nazim Salur told Reuters.

“We want to succeed in the US.”

According to recent reports, Getir could hold another funding round to set up across the country.

It has already attracted around $1 billion in three back-to-back funding rounds this year.

Two months ago, on-demand grocery rival Gorillas paused its US expansion in September to “achieve sustainable growth”.

It will focus on building up its New York business, where it launched in May, but it could give Getir time to carve up the rest of the market.

The Turkish “unicorn” began in 2015 but was supercharged by the pandemic, as people switched to online shopping.

It launched in London in January, and has since reached France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal.
