Asda receives a ‘strong’ external ESG rating
Asda has received a positive rating for its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) from external examiner, financial services agency Sustainable Fitch.
This marks the third consecutive year of a successful outcome, with an entity rating of 3 (1 = excellent, 5 = poor) and an entity score of 57.
The result is based on an external analysis of how the company’s environmental and social initiatives are implemented into the business strategy.
Michael Gleeson, chief financial officer at Asda, said: “We remain committed to improving the transparency of our reporting and embedding ESG considerations into our business strategy.

“By maintaining our score, we’re reinforcing to investors that responsible retailing remains a priority for us and that we are focused on addressing the issues that matter most to our business.”
The supermarket retailer received a strong rating due to its detailed transparency when reporting on greenhouse gas emissions as well as its efforts to lower its carbon footprint across all scopes in the past three years.
In 2024, Asda invested in renewable energy refuelling facilities, which use bio-liquefied natural gas as part of its decarbonisation strategy.
The testing and assessment also considered “Asda’s continued efforts to mitigate material environmental and social impacts from its wide range of consumer products”.
Additionally, last year the retailer made a £1.3m investment to expand its electric home delivery fleet and charging infrastructure across the UK.
