Smirnoff and Jack Daniel’s among spirit brands with the lowest ethical scores

Hennessy, Smirnoff and Jack Daniel’s have been found as the brands with the lowest ethical scores across the spirits sector, new research shows.

According to The Good Shopping Guide’s recent ethics and sustainability rankings of 36 spirits on their practices towards the environment, animals and people, brands owned by LVMH, Diageo and Brown-Forman received the lowest scores.

While Diageo’s Smirnoff, Gordon’s and Captain Morgan, and Brown-Forman’s Jack Daniel’s received a score of 42 out of 100, LVMH brands Belvedere and Hennessy received the lowest at 32.

However, organic gin brand, Juniper Green and organic, sustainable whisky brand, Nc’Nean both scored the highest at 92.

In the middle of the table, Bacardi, Bombay Sapphire, Hendrick’s and Whitley Neill scored 62, while Absolut, Malibu and Havana Club scored lower at 46.

“We are really pleased to see some high ethical ratings within the Spirits sector, especially from the most recent brand launches,” The Good Shopping Guide director, Kat Alexander said.

“There is still work to do from some of the more established Spirits brands, especially regarding environmental impact. In the near future, we hope to see progress across all the ethical criteria we research.”

This news comes as Diageo has acquired ‘super-premium’ dark rum brand, Don Papa Rum for an initial £385 million.

The alcoholic beverage company has also put forward a further potential consideration of up to £155.4m through to 2028 subject to performance, reflecting the brand’s current growth potential.
