Aldi has launched a packaging-free products trial at its store in Ulverston, Cumbria in a bid to encourage sustainable shopping.
If the pilot proves successful, the discounter hopes to extend it to other stores around the country.
Shoppers can fill up recyclable paper bags with basmati rice, brown rice, penne pasta and wholewheat fusilli, which will be sold by weight.

Aldi believes that extending the initiative could save around 130 tonnes of plastic every year.
“Customers at our Ulverston store can now buy the same high-quality items they know and love, while also cutting down on plastic packaging,” Aldi plastics and packaging director Richard Gorman said.
“We hope local customers embrace the trial and we will use their feedback to inform any future plans around refillable products.”
The news comes after Waitrose revealed plans to install its packaging-free products into regular aisles, rather than having them as standalone features.
The grocer first trialled its refillables scheme in 2019.
